Founded in 1886, Argonia sits off the bank of the Chikaskia River, just 45 minutes from Wichita, the largest city in Kansas. Argonia was home to Susanna Madora Salter, the first woman mayor in the United States, whose home is now a museum of the history of Argonia. Argonia now is home to the 534 people reside in the city. The city holds 6 churches, a library, community activity center, multipurpose city building, and, of course, K-12 school district USD 359. An Outreach program is available provided by Cowley County Community College.
There are many community clubs in Argonia such as, the 4H club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Kay Club, Lions Club, and more. The Recreation Commission is a great place to find some exercise inside, or play some basketball, and if you get hot, just run over to the City Swimming Pool and cool off. Argonia has it's own airport, and the first group of flying farmers, crop dusters, were organized here. They have well equipped EMS facilities and a volunteer fire department.
