Derby, a community just south of Wichita, KS, was established in 1869. The 2006 population was 21,101, with businesses employing over 5,162 persons. Derby, KS has been named a Family Circle Top 10 Best Town for Families and a “Best Place to Retire” by U.S. News, World Report and has been a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundations for more than a decade. Residents of Derby boast of the supportive, friendly community and great educational providers in the school system. Derby is recognized for excellence in its educational opportunities. Recently, Wichita State University opened a Southside education center in Derby.
Derby encompasses a wide variety of entertainment and family friendly activities and opportunities. Derby is home to Rock River Rapids Aquatic Park, Derby Recreational Center, Derby Twins baseball team, Derby Days Festival in early June, Skate Park, two Golf courses and Derby Bowl Family Entertainment Center. Rib Crib Barbecue, Casa Martinez, Talliano’s Pizza, and many other restaurants and fast food establishments meet requests for any different type of cuisine. A short travel time of 10 minutes gets you to Boeing, Spirit Aerosystems and McConnell Air Force base which are some of Wichita’s largest employers.
