El Dorado, KS has an approximate population of 12,700 and is only 30 miles from Kansas' largest city, Wichita. One of El Dorado's main attractions is the El Dorado Lake and State Park, which is the largest state park in Kansas. It features 8,000 acres of lake, 4 separate park ares that cover 4500 acres along the shores of the reservoir and 3500 acres of wildlife. With 1100 campsites, 10 group shelters, 10 cabins, 10 boat ramps, Shady Creek- a full service marina, a sail boat marina, shower houses & restrooms, laundry facilities, playgrounds and 24-site group campgrounds. Also nature trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding. Plenty to keep the family busy.
When not at the lake, enjoy the amenities the city has to offer like 2 golf courses, a 43,000 SF YMCA built in '02 with indoor pool, gym, racquetball courts, dance studios, weight room, fitness machines and a kid zone. The city also has a El Dorado Recreational Facility with 3 basketball/volleyball courts, 2 regulation softball fields and 6 regulation soccer fields. And let's not forget the Prairie Bowl Bowling lanes.
If you're not into sports, El Dorado has a lot of other entertainment options from the Central Cinema 6 theaters to the numerous museums including the Butler County History Center & Kansas Oil Museum, the Coutt's Memorial Museum of Art, fine art gallery, Erman B. White Gallery at Butler Community College and several independent galleries. There is also plenty of places for shopping, businesses and dining out also.
