Marion, the county seat of Marion County, has a population around 2000 people. This city is known as the “Rhino Capital of Kansas”, but to find out why you must go to the website. This city is also known as being between two lakes. This is because the Marion County Park and Lake is less than five minutes east of Marion and Marion Reservoir is on the west side of Marion.
These two lakes are big attractions for the city of Marion. Marion County Park and Lake is a 300 acre park and 153 acres of lake. There are two unique features of this lake. It has a heated fishing dock so those who love to fish can fish all year round, and it also has scuba diving in certain locations on the lake. Marion Reservoir has great boating and fishing as well and has 6200 acres of lake.
Marion has a strong history that was founded in 1860 by settlers looking for farm ground. There are many historical attractions such as the Marion Historical Museum, historical main street with stone buildings from the 1800s, the Hill School Building which is the oldest building in Kansas in continuous education use and was built in 1873 of native stone, and the Elgin Building which is the Marion County Courthouse.
Marion also has a Presbyterian church, 7 restaurants, 4 different places for lodging including Country Dreams Bed & Breakfast, Country Inn Motel, NorthShore GuestHouse LLC, The Outdoors Inn Bed & Breakfast, “Central Park”, East Park, Liberty Park, and a baseball complex. It also has the Marion Country Club with 9 holes and a swimming pool, and the Marion Municipal Airport.
