Medicine Lodge, located in Barber County, has an approximate population of 2500. It was established in 1873 and is now located at the junction of Highway 160 and 281 nestled just east of the Gypsum Hills. Medicine Lodge is named for the “medicine lodges” built by the Kiowa Indians near the Medicine River. This city has quite a rich history. It is known for its re-enactment of the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty. The current center of the business district was once a stockade to protect those residents in Medicine Lodge and their belongings from Indian raids.
Although Medicine Lodge has a rich history, it also has a strong presence now. It has a Stockade Museum showcasing many historical items and events from in and around Medicine Lodge. It also has the Carry Nation Home, Kansas High School Rodeo, Gyp Hills Trail Rides, Spring Wildflower Tour, Indian Summer Days, and the Indian Peace Treaty Pageant.
Medicine Lodge also has great business opportunities. There are many businesses already blooming in town including the industrial park, the Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital and Physicians Clinic, and their own newspaper “The Gyp Hill Premiere”.
