Nickerson, a community just west of Hutchinson, Kansas was established in 1872 with a train depot. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad built the depot and named it after their president Thomas Nickerson. It wasn’t until 1875 that people moved to Nickerson. A post office was started early and people continued to move near the railroad. Nickerson is currently in Reno County and has a population of 1,165 people and is the second largest town in this county.
Nickerson has one very unique attraction to its town. It has the Hedrick Exotic Animal Farm and Bed & Breakfast. This farm has many exotic animals in a zoo where you are up close and personal with the animals. Sometimes there are even feeding opportunities. There is also the option to stay in its exotic themed rooms in its bed and breakfast.
Nickerson has many other attractions as well. People’s Bank and Trust is in the city limits for convenience in banking along with 3 churches, public schools, and a public library. There is also the Nickerson City Park which can be rented out for parties or family gatherings and the Sunshine Café and Pizza Connection.
