Sterling, a community in Rice County was established in 1872. Sterling is home of Sterling College, a 4-year Presbyterian school. A high economy driving force is agriculture due to Sterling being located in the Arkansas River Valley. Manufacturing is also quite strong. Sterling is conveniently located for many businesses because it is connected by railroads and on Kansas Highway 96 between Wichita and Great Bend.
It has many beautiful and unique attractions for all ages. There is a beautiful park built around Sterling Lake. Many activities are held there including the annual 4th of July beach volleyball tournament. There is the Carnegie Library, the historical brick depot, the Sterling Country Club for golfing, a bowling alley, a very active downtown that has a variety of shopping, and the Sterling Recreation Commission with activities for all ages. Sterling also takes great pride in their newspaper, the Sterling Bulletin.
Sterling has a public grade school, middle school, and high school. There are also 7 churches, the Alden State Bank, First Bank, and 5 large industries providing employment opportunities: Farmers Coop Union, JACAM Chemicals, KMW Limited, Sterling Farm Supply, and United Industries.
